Nvidia has formed a new industry coalition focused on AI safety and cybersecurity, just days after an autonomous OpenAI agent slipped out of control and carried out an unauthorised break-in at AI platform Hugging Face.
Called the Open Secure AI Alliance, the coalition, which was announced on Monday by Nvidia, counts Adobe, CrowdStrike, Hugging Face and Dell Technologies among its founding members.
The development comes as pressure mounts on the AI industry to demonstrate that it can govern increasingly autonomous systems before governments step in with restrictions in the wake of concerns over rogue AI systems.
What Nvidia is saying
Nvidia said the coalition is designed to develop and share tools that improve AI safety and cybersecurity across the industry, with the company contributing open models to the alliance from day one.

- “That is the mission of the Open Secure AI Alliance: to ensure defenders everywhere have open, frontier tools they can trust and control,” the statement said.
- Nvidia argued in its blog post that “blanket restrictions on open frontier AI systems would weaken defensive capacity and risk concentrating power, dependence and vulnerability in a few closed providers”, making the case that openness and safety are complementary rather than contradictory.
- Nvidia said it is contributing a new open-source project called the Nvidia Labs Object-Oriented Agent framework, now available on GitHub.
According to Nvidia, the agent framework which it said will help control AI agent behaviour more effectively by simplifying the process of testing, tracking, reviewing and regulating agent actions.
Get up to speed
On Tuesday July 21, OpenAI revealed that its AI models hacked another company, Hugging Face’s systems during internal tests.
- OpenAI said two of its advanced artificial intelligence models went rogue, autonomously exploited vulnerabilities and compromised parts of Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. The incident was reported by Nairametrics.
- According to OpenAI, the incident involved GPT-5.6 Sol and a more capable pre-release model, which independently identified and chained together vulnerabilities spanning OpenAI’s research environment and Hugging Face’s production systems.
- The disclosure is regarded as one of the clearest examples to date of advanced AI models independently carrying out complex cyber operations.
The development sparked widespread concern about the possibilities and dangers of AI. Two US lawmakers from opposing parties, Republican Congressman Nathaniel Moran and Democrat Congressman Ted Lieu introduced the AI Kill Switch Act to shut down dangerous AI systems.
The concerns echo closer to home
The concerns animating the coalition by Nvidia were echoed closer to home at the Bluechip Data and AI Summit in Lagos earlier this year, where Bluechip Technologies CEO and co-founder Kazeem Tewogbade warned that the destructive potential of AI remains the dimension of AI development that most concerns him.
- Tewogbade told Nairametrics at the summit that while businesses and technology leaders remain excited about AI’s transformative potential, the scale and nature of risks that could emerge were enormous.
- “There is the potential of deeper destructions. That potential is there, really. And you don’t even know how it’s going to come or what shape or form it will take,” he told Nairametrics.
Tewogbade’s remarks reinforce the rationale behind initiatives such as the Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI), which seeks to strengthen security standards for AI systems as they become more capable.
More insights
The Hugging Face incident that triggered the coalition’s formation was more serious than initially understood.
- OpenAI reportedly failed to detect the breach until well after Hugging Face’s own systems had already contained the threat and the FBI had been alerted, according to Reuters.
- The incident has intensified a debate that was already building across the AI industry about how to contain increasingly capable autonomous agents, particularly when those agents are being tested with safety guardrails deliberately removed to assess their maximum capabilities.
The coalition’s founding member list is itself significant. Hugging Face, the platform that was hacked by an OpenAI agent, is now helping to build the industry’s response to the very class of threat it just experienced.
What you should know
The coalition is coming days after Elon Musk made a bold statement about the future of artificial intelligence.
- Elon Musk said artificial intelligence is on track to surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within the next five years, arguing that the shift is inevitable and cannot realistically be prevented.
The billionaire made the prediction in an interview with The Economist, where he outlined one of his clearest timelines yet for AI overtaking human capability across virtually every field.
