With demand peaking and capacity stretched thin, passengers heading to certain states are now paying premiums that eclipse the national average a phenomenon that has turned popular holiday routes into some of the most expensive in the world by local standards.

Recent transport fare data show that airfare inflation is unevenly distributed. A handful of states, buoyed by high demand, limited entry points, and constrained flight schedules, are now commanding ticket prices far higher than those of their neighbors.

Several structural challenges contribute to these high fares. With only about 0.02% of Nigeria’s population flying, airlines struggle to achieve economies of scale.

Aviation stakeholders have explained that the seasonal spike is largely driven by late bookings and high demand, a pattern that repeats every festive period. Airlines also operate a “bucket” pricing system, under which early passengers pay lower fares, while prices rise as seats fill up.

This ranking is based on a review of scheduled domestic flights departing from Lagos, Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub, during the peak Christmas travel window. Fare data was compiled from major local air travel booking platforms, focusing on available economy-class tickets on active routes operated by domestic carriers in the days leading up to Christmas.

Prices reflect one-way ticket costs, which provide a clearer comparison across destinations, as round-trip fares can vary widely depending on return dates and seat availability and are often significantly higher during the festive rush. Where multiple flights were available on the same route, average listed fares were used to reduce distortions caused by last-seat pricing. 

Abuja 

Cost-N149,420 

Travel from Lagos to Abuja remains the most affordable among Nigeria’s major domestic routes this Christmas season. One-way economy-class fares start at N149,420, making it a budget-friendly option for travellers heading to the nation’s capital.

The route is served by direct flights, with the fastest itinerary operated by United Nigeria Airlines, departing Lagos at 19:00 and arriving in Abuja at 20:15, with a flight time of 1 hour 15 minutes.

Max air fare costs N150,000 for the same route. For Airpeace the price seats at N145,000.

Relatively low fares reflect the high frequency of flights on this corridor, shorter distance, and robust competition among carriers, making it one of the few routes where passengers can avoid premium holiday pricing.

Sokoto 

Cost-N215,110 

Flights from Lagos to Sokoto are relatively more affordable compared with South-East and South-South destinations this Christmas season. One-way economy-class fares are priced at N215,110, making it one of the less expensive routes for festive travel.

The route offers direct service, with the available flight operated by United Nigeria Airlines departing Lagos at 14:00 and arriving in Sokoto at 15:30, with a total flight time of 1 hour 30 minutes.

Lower fares on this route reflect both the shorter distance and less congested demand compared with high-traffic holiday destinations, providing a more budget-friendly option for travellers heading to the North-West.

Port Harcourt

The Lagos–Port Harcourt corridor has emerged as one of the costliest domestic air routes this Christmas season, underscoring the pressure on South-South travel during peak demand. For departures on Saturday, December 20, 2025, available economy-class fares are priced at N335,500 for a one-way ticket, reflecting limited seat availability and strong festive demand.

The route is served by three scheduled flights on the day, with an average flight time of 1 hour 10 minutes on nonstop services.

Asaba 

Cost -N417,217 

Travel from Lagos to Asaba continues to command high fares during the festive season. For one-way economy-class tickets prices start at N395,354, with recommended options averaging around N417,217 per passenger on flight booking platforms.

On Arik air website available flight tickets between N237,738 to as much as N40,000. While on Airpeace the price stands at N337,500

All itineraries involve one-stop connections, most commonly via Abuja (ABV), due to limited nonstop flights to Asaba. The fastest available option, operated by United Nigeria Airlines, departs Lagos and arrives in Asaba for a duration of 3 hours 30 minutes.

Warri

The Lagos–Warri corridor is among the pricier domestic air routes this festive season. For one-way economy-class travel, fares start at N391,895, with recommended options averaging around N429,856 per passenger.

All available flights involve one-stop connections, primarily via Abuja (ABV), as nonstop services to Warri are limited during peak travel periods. The fastest itinerary, operated by Air Peace, departs Lagos at 08:35 and arrives in Warri at 12:10, with a total travel time of 3 hours 35 minutes.

Enugu

Owerri

Flying from Lagos to Owerri has become one of the most expensive one-way domestic journeys this Christmas season, reflecting intense festive demand for South-East routes and limited flight capacity. For Sunday, December 21, 2025, one-way economy fares are priced from N510,638, with most recommended options closer to N580,637.

All available itineraries on the date involve one-stop connections, typically via Abuja, due to the absence of nonstop services. The fastest option, operated by Air Peace, departs Lagos, with a total travel time of 5 hours 20 minutes.

Despite these costs, flights are almost fully booked through early January 2026. Rising insecurity along major highways has also prompted many Nigerians to abandon road travel in favor of air transport, further inflating demand on already constrained domestic routes.
