Cooking gas: 10 states with the lowest price per KG 

Cooking gas prices across Nigeria have seen significant variations in recent months.

The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals the ten cheapest states to purchase Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as of August 2025.

The report shows a general month-on-month (MoM) decline in prices compared to July 2025, reflecting a modest relief for households amid ongoing cost-of-living concerns.

The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg Cooking Gas decreased by 21.42% on a month-on-month basis from N20,609.48 in July 2025 to N16,195.07 in August 2025, the NBS data shows.

On a year-on-year basis, this rose by 4.13% from N15,552.56 in August 2024.

Kogi – N15,904.50

At Number Ten on the list is Kogi state with an average price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N15,904.50 in August 2025, according to the NBS.

The data reveals this represents a 22.62% month-on-month decrease from July 2025, when the average price was N20,555.02.

The data but a notable 10.72% year-on-year rise from August 2025, when it was sold for N14,364.85, according to the NBS.

The state has a growing cooking gas infrastructure, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), in January, constructed five mini-LNG plants in Ajaokuta, to boost local supply. The state also has existing LPG plants and retailers, particularly in Lokoja, contributing to significant market potential for cooking gas.

This is done in partnership with NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG and LNG Arete.

According to NNPCL, the plants have a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d).

Ondo – N15,801.50

Following Kogi state is Ondo in our list of states with the cheapest gas prices. In Ondo state, cooking gas sold for about N15,801.50 in August, dropping 21.46% month-on-month, yet showing a 6.50% increase YoY.

According to NBS data, the average price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of gas stood at N14,836.54 in August 2024. Also, the price was N20,118.57 in July 2025.

In May, Rainoil Gas Limited unveiled a new Liquefied Petroleum Gas plant in Ore to expand gas accessibility and promote clean cooking energy in the state.

Nasarawa – N15,765.24

In Nasarawa state, cooking gas averaged N15,765.24 in August 2025. According to the NBS, this represents a 21.18% month-on-month decrease but 15.57% higher than the same period last year—the steepest YoY increase among the top ten states.

The data shows that gas sold for an average price of N13,640.94 in August 2024. Also, NBS noted that in July 2025, the price was N20,000.62.

The Governor of Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule, has been vocal in his support for the NNPC’s project and other energy-related initiatives in the state, including promoting clean energy and tree planting to combat deforestation.

In 2024, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced plans to establish LPG micro-filling plants in Nasarawa State to make cooking gas more accessible and affordable in rural areas.

Nasarawa was chosen as the pilot state for this project, which aims to introduce and promote the use of gas as a cooking fuel over other energy sources and to reduce deforestation.

The first micro-filling plant was launched in Nasarawa State, which was selected as the pilot state out of 12 identified states.

Ekiti – N15,657.50

Ekiti recorded a 22.84% decline from N20,291.79 in July to N15,657.50 in August 2025.

The 1.88% YoY decrease highlights marginal improvement compared to August 2024.

According to the NBS, gas sold for N15,957.35 on average in August 2024. Also, in July 2025, it went for N20,291.79, according to NBS.

There have been no recent reports of specific actions by the Ekiti state Government on cooking gas.

Oyo – N15,622.38   

Oyo state’s average gas price dropped by 21.95% MoM, from N20,016.59 in July to N15,622.38 in August 2025. However, in contrast to most other states, Oyo saw a 4.37% YoY increase, suggesting prices are still higher than last year.

The data shows that cooking gas per 12kg went on the average at N14,967.65 in August 2024. It also shows that in July 2025, it was sold per 12kg at N20,016.59.

In May 2024, Nairametrics reported that the Oyo State Government and Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) signed an agreement worth over $100 million to develop a gas supply and distribution infrastructure that will deliver gas to industrial and commercial users in the state.

The project starts with the construction of gas distribution infrastructure along a 15km pipeline route, adding that it will grow to deliver up to 60 million standard cubic feet of gas per day across the state.

Apart from this, there have been no recent reports showing the actions of the state government on gas prices.

Cross River – N15,563.89

Cross River experienced one of the steepest price declines nationwide, with a 29.31% MoM decrease from N22,016.84 to N15,563.89, the NBS data shows.

The 8.72% YoY fall further demonstrates improved affordability for residents.

In August, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, signed a strategic partnership agreement with Pana Holdings, aimed at unlocking the state’s vast gas and solid minerals deposit.

“There has to be strong private sector participation, and this pact is one of the bold steps we are taking to ensure energy security, food security, and a more productive economy,” Otu stated.

Ogun – N15,204.43 

Ogun recorded an impressive 25.22% month-on-month drop, falling from N20,332.73 in July to N15,204.43 in August.

On a yearly basis, prices were 5.51% lower than in August 2024, showing a positive trend for consumers in the state.

Apart from a recent effort by a commercial bank, which distributed a unit each of a 3kg cylinder to over 3,000 residents of the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, there have been no recent reports showing the actions of the state government on gas prices.

Imo – N15,177.58

Imo residents enjoyed one of the sharpest price declines, as average prices dipped 24.35% within a month, from N20,064.01 in July to N15,177.58 in August 2025. The 10.02% YoY reduction indicates improving affordability compared to August 2024.

In May, the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, announced that the state is to collaborate with ANOH Gas Processing Company Limited (AGPC) to boost the production of gas in the state.

According to the Managing Director of ANOH Gas Processing Company Limited, Effiong Okon, “Imo will join one of the biggest states for gas production in the country. 

“Our plant is designed to process 300 million standard cubic feet of gas to the energy market and also LPG to the domestic market here in Imo,” he said.

In April, Imo topped the list of states with the highest cooking gas prices when LPG prices averaged N22,938.73 per 12.5kg.

Borno – N15,176.39

Borno state takes the Number Two spot on our list with a 24.55% MoM drop, from N20,115.83 in July to N15,176.39 in August 2025. The state’s minimal 0.16% YoY decline suggests stable gas pricing over the year despite national volatility.

The Borno state government has been involved with cooking gas promotion, particularly through a partnership with the Federal Government’s North East Decade of Gas Clean Cooking (LPG) Grassroots Penetration Programme.

The initiative aims to encourage the adoption of clean cooking gas among households that traditionally use firewood or charcoal, and includes the distribution of LPG cylinders to beneficiaries.

In January, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum announced that the state government will subsidise the cost of petrol to N600 per litre for farmers in communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

Benue – N15,102.50 

Topping the list is Benue. Benue state recorded the lowest average cooking gas price in the country, dropping from N21,006.51 in July 2025 to N15,102.50 in August, representing a 28.11% MoM decrease.

Compared to the same period in 2024, prices also fell by 4.87%, making Benue the most affordable state for households.

The Benue State government is actively promoting the use of cooking gas through its participation in the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP). Initiatives include distributing LPG cooking gas cylinders and burners to households, providing conversion kits to vehicles, and developing gas-based industries and training programs for youth in the state. These efforts are intended to reduce energy costs, promote cleaner environments, and create job opportunities for residents.
