The Lagos State Government through LASRRA, is set to roll out the New Lagos Identity Card, “LAG ID” for residents of the State.
The card which is renewable every 5 years contains a chip that has multipurpose uses and can be accepted anywhere in the world.
This was made known by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Science and Technology, Ms Yinka Fashola, during an Internal Stakeholders Workshop held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Alausa, Ikeja.

Ms Fashola revealed that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring the successful rollout of the card as she encouraged all enrolment officers to be proactive and show commitment to achieving the registration of 100 residents per day.
She was confident that the target of registering 10 million residents before the end of the year can be achieved.
Speaking earlier at the event, the General Manager, Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), Engr. (Mrs.) Ibilola Kasunmu enjoined all members of staff and other stakeholders to be good advocates of the ‘New’ Lagos Identity Card when it is finally unveiled.

What the General Manager of LASRRA is saying
Kasunmu, who said that the workshop was held to explain details of the project, declared that the major difference between the card issued previously and the new one to be unveiled is that the latter is a multipurpose Smart Card that meets International Best Practices and will serve as a valid means of identification.
She said, “The card comes with a chip. Security is one of the features of the LAG ID Card 2.0 amongst others. The chip has multipurpose uses and can be accepted anywhere in the world. Also, you don’t need to carry the multipurpose card around because the chip houses the information to be used by the card. It has contactless capacities.’’
While pointing out that the new initiative aligns with the Smart City Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, Kasunmu said that the concept is the first of its kind in West Africa and was quick to state that the “Unique LAG ID” is to replace the former LASRRA Number.

She also said, “The card has a validity period because it is a bank card and is renewable every five years. It has other 25 generic features which were embedded to ensure inclusive participation by all our Ministries, Departments and Agencies. These generic applications will be customised to suit different MDAs depending on their needs.’’
The General Manager also revealed that the Validation Portal has gone live and described the Android Application solution, which will make registration seamless and accessible through smartphones, as a work in progress.

Nairametrics had in May 2021 reported that the Lagos State Government asked all residents to register with the Lagos State Residents Registration (LASRRA) or update their data with the agency to help them make the right investment in education, and healthcare, among others.
The state government encouraged all residents of Lagos to visit a nearby LASRRA office or outlet for registration, validation, or to update their records.

If the card is going to be useable anywhere in the world and renewable every five years, then it will likely not be free of charge. Personally, with the national id card now mandatory, I don’t think this card is necessary. But I am not surprised either, because rent-seeking has been a consistent key economic strategy of the Lagos state government since the inception of this fourth Republic.

It is all part of their revenue generation greed…..multiple taxation. They ensure you renew 5yearly so every 5years you pay
Waste of resources another way to siphone money.what is the essence of the card when we have the national identity card for identification. Most Nigerians are yet to collect there NIN card ,they are bringing out another one.instead of them to channel all resources to make sure that the plastic NIN card can be given to all Nigerians than carrying paper slip up and down….nonsense

Why do we like unnecessary duplications that will eventually lead to a waste of resources and time in Nigeria? I believe the National ID Card and NIN have effectively covered whatever information the Lagos State Government requires from Lagos Residents. Or is NIMC data not comprehensive enough?

First of its laudable idea but question where can do my registration in Alausa and can it be possible to get link to do it instead of wasting business time at registration center. Thanks
Craziness!…. We just live wasting resources. Currently, I have more than 4 ID’s- NIN, Drivers license, Voters card, Int’l ppt, LASRRA and now this… Why do these pple not think cost when thinking these ideas or does somebody just wishes to cash out again this time.e
We don’t need it. What happened to the national identity card?

Where are the registration points or website
When LASSRI was introduced, residents were told its free & has no effect but latter turned to be the yardstick for benefit it from educàtion & health speaking residents. Lagos state & all it’s gra gra. Mchew
For me, it makes no difference in anyways so long as Lagos is Nigeria and Lagosians are Nigerians. Is this Identity free of cost. Does that means all other states should roll out identities or what. What is the duplication about , why not use Nigerian Identity/ DL/NIM, and invest the resources elsewhere. Who is talking about Lagos ID Card.
