FG earmarks over N190 billion for road construction in the 6 geo-political zones by 2021

FG has earmarked over N190 billion to be spent on road construction and rehabilitation.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked over N190 billion to be spent on road construction and rehabilitation in all the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria.

This is according to “The Public Presentation of 2021 FGN Budget Proposal – Breakdown & Highlights” by the Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning, Dr. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed.

According to the information verified by Nairametrics, the earmarked sum is to be spent on twelve (12) selected road projects which are distributed among the geo-political zones namely;

  • Counterpart Funding for the Dualization of Makurdi – Enugu Road.
  • Counterpart Funding for the Dualization of Akwanga – Jos – Bauchi – Gombe Road.
  • Reconstruction of the Outstanding Sections of Benin – Ofosu – Ore – Ajebandele – Shagamu Expressway.
  • Construction of Bodo – Bonny Road.
  • Rehabilitation of Yola – Hong-Mubi Road.
  • Dualization of Ilorin – Jebba – Mokwa/Bokani Junction Road.
  • Rehabilitation of Nguru – Gashua – Bayamari Road, Section I (Nguru-gashua) Phase II.
  • Dualization of Ilorin – Kabba – Obajana Junction to Benin (Various Sections).
  • Rehabilitation of 9th Mile-Enugu – Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway including 9th mile bypass.
  • Upgrading & Rehabilitation of Keffi – Akwanga – Lafia Road Project.
  • Rehabilitation of Zaria – Funtua – Gusau – Sokoto Birnin Kebbi C/No. 6029a.
  • Dualization of Suleja – Minna Road, Niger State C/No.6077.

Backstory

Nairametrics had earlier reported that the Federal Government is to spend about $321 million repatriated Abacha loot on road construction.

Why this matters

Investing heavily in capital expenditure yields so many positive multiplier effects on the economy, as it is capable of boosting revenue, attracting investors, and expanding business opportunities. Good roads woo investors, who then invest in the country, create jobs for the citizens of the country, and add to national income.

In addition, the latest announcement is in line with the FG’s goal of delivering investment enabling social projects such as vital road constructions.
