The Federal Government has just announced that schools under its control will not be reopening for the forthcoming West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams.
This was disclosed in a tweet post by the aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi from his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

According to Ogunlesi, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said that WAEC should suspend exams and also urges State Governments to toe the line of the Federal Government as this is not the right time to reopen.

Adamu, while addressing state house correspondents after the virtual Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, said that none of the schools under the control of his ministry will resume until schools are considered safe enough
The Minister appealed to the State Governments that have already announced the resumption of schools to reconsider that as it is not safe and the students should be protected. He said that he would prefer that students lose an academic year than expose them to dangers.
He also debunked an earlier report that claimed that the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, announced that schools will be resuming on August 4, 2020. Adamu said that the Minister of State must have been misquoted as the schools under the supervision of the ministry will not be opening on August 4 or anytime soon.

Going further, Adamu pointed out that WAEC will not determine what Nigeria will do as he will rather have the country lose a school year than exposing the students to danger.

Look at cases of rape every where,bcos of idleness. If we continue suspending,2021 will be affected also.

I believe Govt Schools are really d challenge bcos of poor infrastructure over d country.
Federal government suspends reopening of schools to enable students write WASSC examination, for me is not right. I believe that if reopening of the economy can be done in the face the pandemic, students should also be able to write their examination if right conditions are put in place especially when other students are not in school. The standard conditions should be physical distancing and proper hygiene which are difficult to put in place.
Federal government should do the right thing and stop boxing people in. The pandemic has come stay,we should find ways to move on. Stop the excuses because the pandemic is not leaving any time soon,we have restrategize to stay above board.

Those of u supporting the government decision, don’t u think of the students who has to wait for another one year B4 they are allowed to write the exam, with they junior that rubbish ????
All these is not making sense to me FG wants to protect the children by shutting down schools what of the ones hawking in the market aren’t they vunurable to the virus.. Fg opened the market where thousands of people transact without social distancing but fail to reopen schools that they can control the students
This only comes from a government that has no value for educational. It is a pity.

I still don’t get the fg point of view.. FG claims that they are protecting the lives of children by shutting down schools and making the students stay at home but what of the students hawking at market places aren’t they vunurable to the virus and the Govt asked market places to open where social distancing is not adhered to buy shut down schools where they can control the students and ensure safety health practices but instead the fg choose to disrupt the whole academic season
If school should be lockdown again parents will die of headache, now let look into the case, does in SS3 are suffering the most because they achieve anything from morning to night always sitting, this called busy doing nothing, now the case is like this why don’t FG provide any skill opportunity for the. Student because some may not afford the of going lesson. So please the FG should look into and halo our children.
If the minister is not ready I believed many other States are ready. They know the necessary preparation to put in place for both students and teachers to ensure safety.
Are all majority of the students follow their parents to sell their wares. They also go about in public transport.
The population of SS3 Students in every school can not be up to 30% of the total school population, so effective physical distancing can be achieved with other necessary conditions of hygiene put in place.
So the minister’s excuses does not hold water.
