COVID-19: Seyi Makinde recovers, resumes work

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has recovered from the Coronavirus infection and resumed work as the head of the COVID-19 Task Force today.

The governor took to his Twitter handle to announce the new development.

“I am deeply moved by your prayers and support throughout this period. I am so thankful. This evening, I received my second negative test result for COVID-19,” the governor wrote.

Makinde thanked Professor Temitope Alonge, who acted in his stead as Head of the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force, as well as other cabinet members who had kept the state going during his period of isolation and treatment.

Having recovered fully, the governor announced that he would resume as head of the COVID-19 task force on Monday.

I am also grateful to all members of the Task Force for their cooperation during this time. I will be resuming my responsibility as Head of the Task Force from tomorrow.

What you should know: About a week earlier, the governor had announced testing positive to COVID-19 and subsequently went into isolation.

“I just received my COVID-19 confirmation test result. It is positive. I am asymptomatic and will continue to self-isolate,” Makinde said in his tweet.

He appointed Professor Temitope Alonge, a former Chief Medical Director of the University College, Ibadan, as the Head of COVID-19 Task Force while he recovered and urged residents to comply with all directives from the COVID-19 Task Force. “Stay home, stay safe,” he said.

Even from isolation, he continued to send out messages of hope to Oyo state residents, assuring them that the state would pull through the COVID-19 scourge.

In one of such messages, he had written, “I am known as a long-distance runner. If I can outrun and outlast the virus, which I am sure, by God’s grace, I will do, so also will many of our people in Oyo State.”

As at 10 am on Monday, April 6, Nigeria has a total of 232 confirmed cases of the COVID-19, and Oyo state has 9 out of the number.

Lagos State still has the highest with 120 cases, FCT has 47, Osun 20, Edo 9, Bauchi 6, Akwa-Ibom 5, Kaduna 5, Ogun 4, Enugu and Ekiti with 2 cases each, while River, Benue and Ondo States have 1 case each.
