The United States Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced yesterday that Harriet Tubman, the African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and a Union spy during the American Civil War in the 19th century will appear on the front of the $20 bill to replace former President Andrew Jackson.

Harriet Tubman, born (Araminta Ross) in 1820 to an enslaved parents in Dorchester County, Maryland. She died in 1913 as a result of pneumonia.

In 1849 Tubman escaped slavery to become a conductor on the underground railroad and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved families and friends.

A whopping sum of $40 000 was said to be rewarded to anyone who could provide information about her where about.

In December 1851, Tubman guided a group of 11 fugitives northward to stop the movement and abolish slave trade.

Here are quotes from Tubman.

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.

I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.

I grew up like a neglected weed – ignorant of liberty, having no experience of it.

Andrew Jackson, president from 1829 to 1837, will remain on the $20 bill, but on the back.
