This Is The Numbers Game That Could Give PDP The Senate Presidency

The APC in its quest to kick our Senator Bukola Saraki may be siting on a Kamikaze plot as indications suggest the PDP is on the right track to benefit from all of this. Analysis shows the PDP’s plans is as much a game of numbers as it is politics. The number game it seems, has fallen squarely in favour of PDP. Here is how it might play out.

  • The Nigerian Senate has 109 seats, with one of the seats vacant as a result of death.
  • The remaining 108 are made up of 59 APC senators and 49 PDP senators.
  • The APC Senate Caucus is currently divided along the line of those in support of Saraki and those against him
  • PDP on the other hand are firmly united and need about 11 Senators from the APC to get the required votes.
  • 11 Senators will give them 60 votes and an overwhelming majority if an election is called.
  • According to Senate Election rules, either party only needs a simple majority to determine the winner of the Senate Presidency.
  • As it is, getting 11 rogue Senators from the APC is more likely than retaining the loyalty of all the members of the APC.
  • To make it worse, if the PDP gets the Senate Presidency it is unlikely that he can be impeached as it will require a two-third majority to get out a sitting Senate President.
  • Politics at the end of the day is a numbers game and as it seems PDP has the aces.
