The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Ministry of Power, has signed a $500 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Bank for the implementation of the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project across 25 states.
Nigeria recorded a 5.20% increase in hydropower supply in Q3/2023. This is according to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Hydropower has been found to be Nigeria’s cheapest source of electricity as it charged N3.67 per kilowatt (kW) hour in electricity 2023 electricity invoices.
The proposed plant is expected to be the largest hydropower project in West Africa
Hydro power generation still suffers a handful of setbacks including the problem of trans-boundary water conflicts.
